The Janata Party government, which came to power after the Emergency, arrested Indira Gandhi in 1977 under the Anti-Corruption Act. CBI accused Indira of taking 104 jeeps from two companies. Indira Gandhi, who was always in the headlines after the emergency was imposed from 1975-1977, had converted the disaster into an opportunity.

Indira was adamant on handcuffing

In fact, when CBI officers arrested Indira Gandhi and were taking her to Badkhal Lake Guest House, after stopping at the railway gate, she got down from the car and sat on the culvert. Seeing him sitting on the bridge, a crowd of people gathered there. Indira asked the CBI officers to put handcuffs on her hands. According to the news published in Amar Ujala on 4 October 1977, Indira Gandhi not only asked the officers to handcuff her but also refused to give personal bond.

When this incident happened, Indira Gandhi’s two sons Rajiv and Sanjay Gandhi, daughters-in-law Sonia and Maneka were also present. After the arrest, a huge crowd gathered at Indira’s residence and people started raising slogans in favor of Indira Gandhi. Indira Gandhi’s lawyer BR Handa was also present there. He said that Indira could not be taken out of Delhi because she was arrested without the order of the magistrate.

There was a lot of debate between Handa and CBI officers. The point of debate was that an arrested person cannot be transferred from the jurisdiction of one court to another. After knowing the legal situation, Indira Gandhi also refused to get up from the culvert. Meanwhile, his supporters gathered there also got agitated and started shouting slogans. He asked which law has the government changed to take away Badkhal. After half an hour the CBI officers again agreed to take him to Delhi.
