Onion and Tomato Rising prices have pushed the average cost of a vegetarian thali up by nearly eight per cent in April. This information has been given in a report released on Wednesday. On the other hand, the fall in the price of broilers has led to a decline in the price of non-vegetarian food, according to CRISIL Market Intelligence and Analysis’ monthly ‘Roti Rice Rates’ report. The price of a thali comprising roti, vegetables (onions, tomatoes and potatoes), rice, dal, curd and salad increased to Rs 27.4 per plate in April from Rs 25.4 a plate in the same period a year ago and March, Marginally higher than Rs 27.3 in 2024.

Non-veg thali becomes cheaper

The report attributed the overall increase in the price of vegetarian thali to 41 percent increase in onion, 40 percent increase in tomato, 38 percent increase in potato, 14 percent increase in rice and 20 percent increase in pulses. The report said prices of cumin, chilli and vegetable oil fell by 40 per cent, 31 per cent and 10 per cent respectively, keeping the cost of the thali from increasing further. In the case of non-veg thali, which includes all the same ingredients but has chicken instead of dal, its price dropped to Rs 56.3 in April, compared to Rs 58.9 a year ago, but to Rs 54.9 in March, 2024. This is high compared to the price per plate.

Decline in cost of non-veg thali

It said a 12 per cent decline in the price of broiler, which accounts for 50 per cent of the overall price, was the main reason for the decline in the cost of non-veg thali on a year-on-year basis. The report said that the price of non-veg thali has increased by three percent compared to March.
