Fraud and scam cases have increased rapidly in the telecom sector in the recent past. Cyber criminals and scammers are adopting new methods to make people a victim of cheating. On the other hand, the Government of India is also taking strict steps to curb cases of scam and fraud. The government has disconnected about 3.4 crore mobile numbers related to fraud. These mobile numbers were discontinued via Sanchar Saathi portal.
The government has not only disconnected mobile numbers through communication partner port but has also blocked around 3.19 lakh IMEI number. According to the information, the Department of Telecommunications has also discontinued about 16.97 lakh WhatsApp account with the help of AI and Big Data to prevent the growing fraud on social media.
Giving information in the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Communications and Rural Development, Dr. Pammasani Chandra Shekhar said that with the help of Sanchar Saathi, strictness has also been taken on such number which were increasing messages or spasm in bulk. More than 20,000 numbers sending messages in bulk have been blacklisted.
Identification of fake connection

Minister Dr. Pammasani Chandra Shekhar said that with the help of Artificial Intelligence and Big Data, connections taken from fake documents are also being identified.
According to the information, telecom service provides have blacklisted around 1150 people or institutions. Along with this, more than 18.8 lakh devices have been completely disconnected. The minister said that its effect is also visible now. In the year 2024, the complaints of unregistered telemarketers were 1,89,419 but now its number has come down to 1,34,821 by January 2025.
