NHAI said that all national highways work on toll plazas ICD 2. 5 protocols, which describes the status of tag in real time, so fastag customers can recharge the tag at any time before crossing the toll booth. Some toll plazas on state highways are still on ICD 2. 4 protocols, which require regular updates of tag status.

Soon all such toll plazas are being planned to shift to ICD 2. 5 protocols. ICD means interface control document. Fastag users are encouraged to connect their fastag wallets with UPI/current/savings accounts under an auto-recharge setting to eliminate the need for manual recharge. Customers are able to recharge their fastag using various payment channels like UPI and Net Banking at any time before reaching the toll.
