DOT i.e. the Department of Telecommunications has instructed to remove some specific content from all social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, Google, X. Social media companies will have to remove these content by 28 February 2025, assuming the order of the Department of Telecommunications. For this, companies have been given 10 days time. The Department of Telecommunications says that these specific content is not according to the Telecommunication Act 2023 and scammers can take advantage of them and fraud with the people.

Instructions to remove content

The Department of Telecommunications has instructed platforms like Facebook, Google and X to remove all the content in which Influencers have explained ways to bypass the calling line identification (CLI). Many influencers have told how to show different numbers to those who receive calls by bypassing CLI in their video content. Dot says that scammers can cheat people with the help of such videos on social media.

CLI Spoofing

According to the new telecommunication Act, it is called CLI Spoofing. Although the social media platform usually comes under the Ministry of Electronics i.e. Meity under the IT Act, the Department of Telecommunications has instructed to remove these content because these content on the social media platforms are not compatible with the telecom act.

Criminal action

The Department of Telecommunications has issued its advisory under section 42 (3) (c) of the Telecom Act. Apart from this, it also mentions section 42 (3) (E) and section 42 (7), which is to use the telecom identification temporary as well as the identity module and other things of subscribers for fraud. According to such crime Telecom Act 2023, it is considered non -bailable, so criminal cases can also be run.

Provision of fine

There is a provision for jail for 3 years and a fine of up to Rs 50 lakh for violating the rule. Under section 42 (6), such penalty videos can be imposed on social media companies as well as social media companies. The Department of Telecommunications has also clarified that it would be considered a criminal activity to temperature the telecom identification such as CLI, IP address or IMEI number. In such a situation, social media apps hosting these content will have to be removed.
