Rahul Gandhi will attend the meeting with Election Commissioner in PM House
Today i.e. on 17 February 2025, a meeting is to be held for the selection of the new Chief Election Commissioner (CEC). The meeting regarding the Election Commissioner is to be held at PM House at 5.30 pm. PM Modi, Union Law Minister Arjun Meghwal and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi will be involved in this match. The panel will recommend the name one of the candidates selected by the search committee. After this, the President will appoint the next Chief Election Commissioner on the basis of this recommendation. According to the law, the Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioners will be appointed by the President on the recommendation of the selection committee headed by the Prime Minister, which will include the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha and a Union Cabinet Minister nominated by the Prime Minister.

The Chief Election Commissioner, Rajiv Kumar took over the charge in the year 2022. Under his leadership, the Election Commission concluded the Lok Sabha elections in 2024. Apart from this, assembly elections were held in many states. These include the elections of Jammu and Kashmir, Maharashtra, Haryana, Karnataka, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand and the Delhi Assembly held this year.
