Mahant Satyendra Das, the chief priest of the Ram Janmabhoomi temple located in Ayodhya, has passed away on Wednesday. On Thursday evening, Mahant Satyendra Das was given water samadhi in the Saryu river. His body has been given water samadhi at Tulsidas Ghat. What is water samadhi?
Actually, there are different processes of funeral in Sanatan Dharma. One of them is when the body of a monk saint is shed into the river without funeral. This is called Jal Samadhi. At the time of giving water samadhi, heavy stones are tied along the corpse. The body is then flowed in the middle of the river. Apart from this, the saints are also given geo-samadhi. In this, the dead body is placed in the ground of Padmasana or Siddhisan and buried in the ground.
Why is water samadhi given?
There has been a tradition of giving water tomb to saints since ancient times in Indian culture and eternal religion. There are beliefs that water is a sacred element and it soon gives salvation from samadhi. It is believed that the human body is made of five elements i.e. earth, water, fire, air and sky. The bodies of saints are merged into water so that they return to their original element. Explain that saints are considered to be quite different from common humans. It is full of penance, practice etc. Therefore, instead of cremation of his body, he is given water samadhi.
Who was Acharya Satyendra Das?
Satyendra Das was the prominent priest of Ayodhya Ram temple. He retired at the age of 20. He was one of the most prominent saints of Ayodhya coming from Nirvani Akhara. At the age of 85, he got a brain stroke on February 3, after which he was admitted to Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI). He died at the age of 85 on Wednesday.
