India’s Grandmaster R.K. Pragananand won the title by defeating his compatriot D. Gukesh in the final of the Tata Steel Masters 2025 chess competition held on Sunday, 2 February at Vijk Aun Gi, Netherlands. The final was a complete Indian match, in which both players scored similar points after 13 rounds. Pragananand only needed a draw to win the title, but he faced defeat to Vincent Kimar in Germany. Meanwhile, Gukesh also lost to Arjun Arigasi. After this situation, the match between the two reached the tiebreaker. In the tiebreaker, both the players struggled to win and a kind of drama was also seen in the match.

Something like this was the condition of the match

In the initial game, Pragananand made a mistake and lost his game, as he was in reverse colors from Benoni. However, in the second game, he took advantage of the Trumpovski opening and took 1–1 with Gukesh’s mistake. This was then converted into a tiebreaker Sadan Death, where the player with white pieces got 2 minutes and 30 seconds, while the black piece player got 3 minutes. In this stressful match, Gukesh lost his control, while Pragananand won the match with his brilliant technology and captured the Masters title for the first time in his career.

What is Bowe Pragnanandha after winning

This was the second consecutive year when Gukesh lost the tiebreaker, as he lost to Vai Yi of China in 2024. After winning the title, Praganand jokingly said that he wanted to gift his title to Arjuna, who defeated Gukesh in the final round, leading to the tournament tiebreaker. Pragananand said that I did not think Arjun would defeat Gukesh. For some time it seemed that Gukesh is really better. When I saw that result, I had already shown the wrong game and I was in a difficult situation. I felt that I could only rescue. With this stunning victory, Pagnanand not only won his title, but also established a new place in his chess journey.
