New Delhi: The government is preparing to provide relief to passengers on national highways. For this, the government is working on a uniform toll policy on national highways. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari himself has given this statement. Nitin Gadkari said, “The government is working on a uniform toll policy to give relief to passengers on national highways.”

Gadkari has given this statement in an interview given to news agency PTI. He said that we are working on a uniform toll policy. This will provide a solution to the problem to the passengers. He also said that now the infrastructure of India’s highway matches America.

Ministry also takes seriously complaints made by passengers on social media

Nitin Gadkari also said that the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is taking complaints made by passengers on social media very seriously and is taking strict action against the contractors involved. Currently, while about 60 percent of the traffic on national highways is of private cars, the toll revenue from these vehicles is barely 20–26 percent.

He said that the toll charges on highways have increased, while in the last 10 years more and more parts have come under the tolling system, which is often increasing the dissatisfaction of users. The total toll collection in India in 2023-24 reached Rs 64,809.86 crore, which is 35 percent more than the previous year.

The collection in 2019-20 was Rs 27,503 crore. All user fees on national highways are set up as per the provisions of the National Highway Fee (Determination of Rates and Collection) Rules, 2008 and the provision of the relevant concession agreement. Nitin Gadkari expressed confidence that in the current financial year, the Ministry of Highways will cross the previous record of highway construction in the financial year 2020-21. About 7,000 km of highways have been constructed so far in the current financial year.
