Maharashtra’s weightlifter Vaishnav Thakur has broken the national record in the National Games in the men’s 102 kg category. But even after this, he had to be satisfied with the silver medal because he was beaten by Army’s Jagdish Vishwakarma in total weight. Jagdish fulfilled his clean-end-oriented effort by standing on just one leg. Vaishnav lifted 160 kg in the snatch category and left behind the previous national record of 157 kg which was Jagdish’s name. But Vaishnav finished second in total weight (335 kg) due to a bad clean and jerk effort of 175 kg.

Jagdish Vishwakarma won the gold medal

Jagdish, who was successful in lifting only 152 kg in snatch, won the gold medal by lifting a total weight of 345 kg in clean and jerk, while Harshit Sehrawat (329 kg) of Haryana won the bronze. Jagdish raised his left leg after his clean and jerk attempt this time also and stood on only one leg for a moment of second. However, by then he had lifted weight. Medals in the National Games are given only on the total weight category.

Varna Verma did wonders in women’s class

In the 81 kg category of women, Verma of Chandigarh won a total of 208 kg and won a gold medal. He successfully lifted 93 kg in snatch and 115 kg in clean and jerk. Manpreet of Punjab won a silver medal with a total of 197 kg (85 kg snatch, 112 kg clean and jerk), while Anjana Srijit of Kerala won a bronze medal with a total of 196 kg.

In the men’s 109 kg category, Harcharan Singh of Jashan dominated the snatch and won the gold medal with a total of 347 kg by lifting 160 kg and 187 kg in clean and jerk. Mohammad Jamir Hussain (Army) won a silver medal with a total of 337 kg (150 kg snatch, 187 kg clean and jerk). Manish of Haryana tried to set a national record of 193 kg in clean and jerk, but failed and had to be satisfied with the bronze medal by lifting a total weight of 331 kg.
