PM Modi has repeatedly pledged to make India a hub of green energy in climate energy change conferences. The Prime Minister’s ambition is also to make India nuclear power rich. In this direction, the Modi government has taken its first step in the budget of 2025. This budget will be useful to create new nuclear power centers in the country and increase the capacity of old energy centers.
India’s current nuclear power status
Currently, nuclear power is the 5th major source of electricity for India. There are a total of 7 power plants across the country. While there are more than 22 nuclear reactors that produce 6780 MW nuclear energy. Apart from this, the Kakrapar Nuclear Energy Project (KAPP-3) has also been linked to the grid in January 2021. The number of pressure heavy water reactors (Phwrs) is 18 and 4 are light water reactors (LWRs). The government has also allowed joint enterprises along with public undertakings to increase India’s nuclear program. As a result, the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) is now working on two joint enterprises with National Thermal Power Corporation Limited (NTPC) and Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL).

India’s first indigenous nuclear power home
India is installing the world’s first thorium-based nuclear plant, “Bhavani”, in Kalpakkam in Tamil Nadu using Uranium-233. This plant will be completely indigenous and the first plant of its kind will be. The experimental thorium plant “Kamini” is already present in Kalpakkam.
