Mahatma Gandhi was born on 2 October 1869. His father Karamchand Gandhi married 4 times. His first 2 wives died after giving birth to a daughter, while he had no children from the third wife. Later, with the consent of his third wife, Karamchand Gandhi married Putlibai, who was the mother of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi i.e. Mahatma Gandhi.

Mahatma Gandhi was shot dead by Nathuram Godse on 30 January 1948. At the time of the incident, he was going for evening prayer. Gandhi’s death anniversary is celebrated as Martyr’s Day across the country.

Apart from Nathuram Godse, Narayan Apte, Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, Shankar Kistaiya, Dattatraya Parachure, Vishnu Karkare, Madanlal Pahwa and Gopal Godse were prosecuted in the case of Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination.

On 10 February 1949, the judge sentenced Godse (left) and Narayan Apte (in between) to death for the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi. At the same time, Gopal Godse, Vishnu Karkare, Madanlal Pahwa, Shankar Kistaiya and Dattatreya Parachure were sentenced to life imprisonment. Veer Savarkar was acquitted due to lack of evidence.
