Mahakumbh

The second Amrit Snan of Mahakumbh is to be held on January 29, preparations for which have started. Mahakumbh is to continue till 26th February. 13 Akharas of Naga Sadhus have set up their camp on the banks of Sangam and are engrossed in the devotion of the Lord. These Naga Sadhus take bath first on the day of Amrit Snan. Mahakumbh has a different significance in Hindu religion. The reason is that it comes after 12 years. Also, Mahakumbh is organized only at 4 places in the country which include Ujjain, Haridwar, Nashik and Prayagraj.

The first bath of Naga Sadhus is considered to be the center of religion and spiritual energy. In the Amrit Snan, first of all the Nagas of 13 Akharas, Sadhu Saints, Acharyas, Mahamandaleshwar and female Naga Sadhus take bath. After this comes the turn of the devotees. According to the tradition of Kumbh, Amrit Snan takes place only on special dates. Sages and saints from all over the country reach this Mahakumbh and take a dip in the holy river. According to religious belief, taking Amrit Snan (royal bath) in Mahakumbh leads to salvation and the impurities of body and mind are removed.

Why is Mahakumbh important for saints and ascetics?

According to the scriptures, Mahakumbh is considered a very important bath for saints and ascetics. It is believed that just by taking bath in nectar one attains virtue equal to 1000 Ashwamedha Yagyas. After taking bath in Amrit in Mahakumbh, the sages and saints meditate on the Lord. This is the reason why sages and saints definitely go to Mahakumbh for the welfare of the world and their own salvation.

When is Amrit Bath?

The first Amrit Snan in Mahakumbh has been completed on 14 January, now it is the turn of the second Amrit Snan which will take place on 29 January. This time the third Amrit Snan will take place on 3rd February. After this, there will be a bath on Maghi Purnima on 12th February and on Mahashivratri (26th February).
