Rishi Sunak, the first Prime Minister of Indian origin in Britain, faced a huge defeat. After 14 years, the Conservative Party was out of power. The Conservative Party faced the biggest defeat in 200 years. Rishi Sunak’s gamble of calling early elections proved costly and after 14 years, the Labour Party made a comeback with a bang, winning a huge victory. In the 650-member House of Commons, the Labour Party won 412 seats while Rishi Sunak’s Conservative Party got only 121 seats. Labour Party leader Keir Starmer has become the new Prime Minister of Britain. After the election results came out, Keir Starmer met Britain’s King Charles III and the King appointed him as the new Prime Minister of Britain. After meeting King Charles, Keir Starmer reached 10 Downing Street, the Prime Minister’s residence of Britain, where he was given a warm welcome. Earlier, former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak accepted defeat in the election and met King Charles and submitted his resignation. After this, he left the Prime Minister’s House with his wife Akshata Murthy.

Rishi Sunak’s Conservative Party was in power for the last 14 years. During this time, the party was surrounded by many controversies. Due to the bad condition of the economy, falling standards of living and being caught in many scandals one after the other, the defeat of the Conservative Party in these elections was almost certain. Britain’s new Prime Minister Keir Starmer told his supporters that he is going to start work immediately, because he has big challenges ahead of him. The most interesting thing in the British Parliament elections is that this time 26 candidates of Indian origin won the elections. Their roots are spread from Kerala to Punjab. 19 MPs of Indian origin have won on the ticket of the Labor Party, which returned to power. This time 10 candidates of the Sikh community have been elected to the British Parliament. This is the largest number of Sikh candidates to reach the British Parliament so far. Among them, there are 5 Sikh women and 5 Sikh men and all of them are from the Labor Party. Among these 10 Sikh MPs, Tanmanjit Singh Dhesi and Preet Kaur Gill have won the elections for the third consecutive time.

Tanmanjit Singh Dhesi and Preet Kaur Gill have been continuously raising issues related to the Sikh community in the British Parliament. Apart from these, the 8 Sikhs who have won are first timers. This time 26 MPs in the British Parliament will be of Indian origin. In the last Parliament, only 6 MPs of the Labor Party were of Indian origin. This time 19 MPs of the Labor Party, which is forming the government, are of Indian origin, the reason for this is that Britain’s new Prime Minister Keir Starmer had said in his election rallies that improving relations with India is one of his priorities. He had described Kashmir as an integral part of India, went to Swami Narayan Temple and prayed, gave tickets to a large number of people of Indian origin and the result was that despite being of Indian origin, Rishi Sunak could not get the support of Indian voters. The Labor Party has also now realized the power of Indians. Therefore, it should be hoped that the obstacles in the free trade agreement between India and Britain will be removed soon. Keir Starmer will agree to give work permit to Indian IT professionals, an agreement will be reached between the two countries as soon as possible. (Rajat Sharma)
