The low pressure system formed over the Bay of Bengal has turned into cyclonic storm ‘Remal’. In view of this, a warning of very heavy rainfall has also been issued in the coastal districts of West Bengal, North Odisha, Mizoram, Tripura and South Manipur.

New Delhi/Kolkata: The low pressure system formed over the Bay of Bengal has turned into cyclonic storm ‘Remal’ and it is expected to hit the coast between Sagar Island of West Bengal and Khepupara of Bangladesh on Sunday midnight. During this time, winds are expected to blow at a speed of more than 100 km per hour. Along with this, a warning of very heavy rainfall has also been issued in the coastal districts of West Bengal, North Odisha, Mizoram, Tripura and South Manipur on 26-27 May. This is the first cyclonic storm in the Bay of Bengal in this pre-monsoon season. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) gave this information.

‘Remal’ turns into a cyclonic storm

According to the latest information released by the India Meteorological Department at 7:50 pm on Saturday, the deep depression over east-central Bay of Bengal intensified into cyclonic storm ‘Remal’ and is centered about 360 km south-southeast of Khepupara and 350 km south-southeast of Sagar Island.

The Meteorological Department has issued an ‘Orange Alert’ for Kolkata, Howrah, Nadia and East Medinipur districts. These districts have been warned of winds ranging from 80 to 90 kmph to 100 kmph with torrential rains at one or two places in the next two days. Wind speeds ranging from 60 to 70 kmph to 80 kmph are expected in Hooghly, East Bardhaman and West Medinipur districts with heavy rains. Rain is expected in Assam and Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram, Manipur and Tripura on 27 and 28 May. Rain may also occur in some places of Bihar.

In north Odisha, the coastal districts of Balasore, Bhadrak and Kendrapara will receive heavy rainfall on May 26-27, while Mayurbhanj is likely to receive rainfall on May 27, the weather office said. The IMD has warned of localised flooding and widespread damage to weak structures, power and telephone wires, kutcha roads, crops and orchards in the South and North 24 Parganas districts of West Bengal.

Tripura government issued warning

The Tripura government has issued an alert in all eight districts after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a warning of heavy to very heavy rains, gusty winds and thunderstorms in the next 48 hours. “Heavy rains and gusty winds are expected in Tripura from May 25 to May 28 due to the impact of the cyclonic storm,” said Tamal Majumdar, Additional Secretary (Revenue). He said heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected at isolated places in South Tripura, Gomti, Dhalai, Sepahijala and West Tripura districts on May 26. “As a precautionary measure, an orange alert has been issued in these districts,” he said. “Thunderstorms and gusty winds with speed reaching 50-60 kmph and heavy rains may affect South Tripura, Gomti, Dhalai, Sepahijala and West Tripura districts on May 27,” he said.

It is expected to hit the coasts of Bengal and Bangladesh on May 26

According to the information, cyclonic storm Ramal is expected to hit the adjacent coasts of West Bengal and Bangladesh at midnight of 26 May with a speed of 110-120 kmph to 135 kmph. The Meteorological Department Office has warned of extremely heavy rainfall in the coastal districts of West Bengal and North Odisha on 26-27 May. At the time of the cyclone hitting the coast, storm waves of up to 1.5 meters are expected in the low-lying areas of coastal West Bengal and Bangladesh.
