Mumbai. The Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena on Saturday named its MLC Anil Parab and party official JM Abhyankar as its candidates from the Mumbai Graduates and Mumbai Teachers constituencies for the Maharashtra Legislative Council elections to be held on June 26. Parab was a minister in the previous Maha Vikas Aghadi government led by Thackeray in Maharashtra. Abhyankar is the head of the teachers’ wing of Shiv Sena (UBT).

Out of 78 seats in the Legislative Council, Shiv Sena (undivided) has 11, NCP (undivided) has nine, Congress has eight and BJP has 22 seats. Janata Dal United (JDU), Peasants and Workers Party and Rashtriya Samaj Party have one member each, while four are independents. Twenty-one seats are vacant. Out of the vacant seats, there are 12 such seats on which nomination will be made by the Governor.

Election for the nine seats will be held through local body representatives. It is noteworthy that after the split in these parties, most of the members of Shiv Sena and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) went to the faction led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and the faction led by Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar respectively.

Biennial elections have become necessary for four seats of the Legislative Council – Mumbai Graduates, Konkan Graduates, Mumbai Teachers and Nashik Teachers – because the term of these members is ending in July. The last date for filing nomination papers is June 7. Voting will be held on June 26 and the results will be announced on July 1.

Parab claimed that the Mumbai Graduates constituency has been under the control of Shiv Sena (undivided) for the last 30 years and the work done by Shiv Sainiks is sure to ensure their victory. Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena, NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) and Congress are the constituents of the Maha Vikas Aghadi. (Agency)
