Demand for electricity increased in summer (concept photo)

This summer, power demand records may be broken. Earlier this month, the Ministry of Power had projected peak power demand of 235 GW during the day and 225 GW in the evening for May, and 240 GW during the day and 235 GW in the evening for June 2024.

New Delhi: This time, a period of intense heat is continuing in many areas of the country. On Sunday (May 19), the mercury reached 47.5 in Najafgarh, Delhi. In many cities, the mercury is above 40 degrees. In such a situation, to get relief from the uncontrollable heat and heat, people are using appliances like fans, coolers and ACs a lot. Due to which the demand for electricity has increased to a record level. India’s electricity demand reached a new high of 239.96 gigawatts in the current session on Friday.

According to the ministry data, the maximum power demand or the highest supply in the day was recorded at 239.96 GW on Friday, the highest so far this summer season. Power Ministry data shows that on Thursday it was 236.59 GW, while on Wednesday the maximum power demand was 235.06 GW. The all-time high power demand of 243.27 GW was recorded in September, 2023. This record may be broken this summer season. Earlier this month, the Power Ministry had projected a maximum power demand of 235 GW during the day and 225 GW in the evening for May and 240 GW during the day and 235 GW in the evening for June, 2024.

Industry experts believe that the power demand in May is already around the level of 240 GW, which was estimated by the Ministry of Power for the month of June. They opined that the power demand may increase further and cross the all-time high. Apart from this, the Ministry of Power has also estimated that the maximum power demand in this summer season can reach 260 GW.

According to the data, the maximum power demand was 224.18 GW in April, 2024, when the summer season started in different parts of the country. It was 221.82 GW in March, 222.16 GW in February and 223.51 GW in January. During May, the maximum supply reached 233 GW on May 6 and 233.80 GW on May 21. In May last year, it was recorded at 221.42 GW.
