Long queues for voting in Delhi amid scorching heat

Voting for the sixth phase of Lok Sabha elections began at 7 am on Saturday amid rising temperatures in Delhi and continued till 6 pm. The temperature in Delhi reached 46.9 degrees Celsius on Saturday, which is about 7 degrees more than normal, yet the voters showed enthusiasm and came out of their homes to vote. People voted in large numbers even in the scorching heat. Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal participated in the voting along with his wife and children.

Talking about the weather, a red alert for heatwave has been issued in the city for the next four days as the weather office has predicted that the temperature of the national capital is likely to rise in the coming days. The IMD has also predicted hot day as well as hot night conditions in Rajasthan, Delhi, Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh between May 25 and May 28.

Voting took place in Delhi amidst scorching heat

Voting for all seven seats of Delhi took place in the sixth phase on Saturday. On the day of polling, Delhi recorded a maximum temperature of 46.9 degrees Celsius, the highest temperature was recorded in Mungeshpur area at 46.9 degrees Celsius, followed by Najafgarh at 46.8 degrees Celsius, Narela at 46.7 degrees Celsius. According to the weather department, the day temperature has increased dramatically due to persistent heat wave driven by a high pressure system over northern India. The IMD has said that the current heat wave is likely to continue.

Heat alert issued in these states for the next four days

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted severe heat conditions in most parts of Rajasthan and isolated parts of Delhi, Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh. The heat wave is also likely to affect Jammu division, Himachal Pradesh, western Uttar Pradesh, eastern Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, central Maharashtra and Gujarat.

Six people were reported dead due to suspected heat wave in Rajasthan, where the temperature soared to 49 degrees Celsius, the weather department said on Friday. According to the state disaster management and relief department, three persons died in Balotra and one each in Bhilwara, Bikaner and Jodhpur. Several parts of the state are reeling under intense heat, with Phalodi being the hottest at 49 degrees Celsius.
