Cyclonic Storm Remal

The low pressure system formed over the Bay of Bengal has turned into cyclonic storm ‘Remal’ and it is expected to hit the coast between Sagar Island of West Bengal and Khepupara of Bangladesh at midnight on Sunday. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has given this information. This is the first cyclonic storm in the Bay of Bengal in this pre-monsoon season. According to the information received from the India Meteorological Department at 7:50 pm on Saturday, the deep pressure over the east-central Bay of Bengal has turned into cyclonic storm ‘Remal’ and is centered about 360 km south-southeast of Khepupara and 350 km south-southeast of Sagar Island.

The IMD said the storm is likely to intensify further into a severe cyclonic storm by Sunday morning and cross the adjoining West Bengal and Bangladesh coasts between Sagar Island and Khepupara on Sunday midnight with wind speed of 110 to 120 kmph.

Heavy rain alert in West Bengal and Odisha

The Meteorological Department Office has warned of extremely heavy rainfall in the coastal districts of West Bengal and North Odisha on 26-27 May. Apart from this, extremely heavy rainfall is also expected in some parts of Northeast India on 27-28 May. The Meteorological Office has advised fishermen not to go to sea in the North Bay of Bengal till the morning of 27 May. A red alert has been issued for 26-27 May in coastal districts like South and North 24 Parganas of West Bengal, where extremely heavy rains are expected in some areas. Apart from this, an orange alert has been issued for 26-27 May in Kolkata, Howrah, Nadia and Purba Medinipur districts, where strong winds are expected to blow at a speed of 80 to 90 kilometers per hour.

Flights suspended

Kolkata airport authorities have decided to suspend flight operations for 21 hours from Sunday afternoon in view of the likely impact of cyclone Ramal. A total of 394 arriving and departing flights, both international and domestic, will not operate to and from the airport during the flight suspension period, an Airports Authority of India (AAI) spokesperson told PTI.

Apart from this, coastal districts like Balasore, Bhadrak and Kendrapara in northern Odisha are expected to receive heavy rains on May 26-27, while heavy rains are expected in Mayurbhanj on May 27. The IMD has warned of local flooding and significant damage to weak structures, power and communication lines, unpaved roads, crops and gardens in the South and North 24 Parganas districts of West Bengal. People in the affected areas have been advised to remain indoors.
